If you go by TEXT BOOK city limits, which are a joke, then you
will get a really screwed up list - Mexico City "proper" does not even
make the list at all, but for hundreds of square miles around the
" text book " city are slums with over 160 million people and rising
by 100's of thousands monthly. I have no idea what the real count is, the 160 million figure is years out of date.
The same with Tokyo. The official city limit borders would place it
low on the list, but again, if you walk across the street over the " line " on the map, you would continue the city with 145 million people or so, with no break in urban area whatsoever...
The real listing of populated areas has nothing to do with " government" "official " listings used by people sitting in offices compiling the lists for text books....
I don't know af any REAL sources of accurate data, but lets
get serious - the textbooks ignore 160 to 200 million people around the Mexico city core since they are " poor ". What crock.

The data for this list was compiled from the 2005 urban population figures from the United Nations 2005 largest by population.

Tokyo (Greater Tokyo Area)
Japan Official metropolitan area (Shutoken MMA)
size:13,500 sq.km
Population: 35,197,000
Population Density (people per sq.km) 2,610

By population density (These figures are for cities proper, not for the whole of the metropolitan area (two cities/areas can run together, but they are not the same place!):
Mumbai (Bombay)
Population: 12,778,721
Area: 440 sq.km
Population density (people per sq.km) 29,042

(if you look on the websites, you will find where Mexico City fits in!)
