I'm only 19 but i like to think of myself as a reasonably aware person, i keep an eye politics, situations like global warming, iran, irasel etc, but it seems to me in england in particular there has been a shocking decline in the social awareness of people it seems ignorance is the new fashion today, with so called celebritys like Coleen Mcglougclin and Glyn from Big Brother being lorded as examples of achievement in life, and people who consider Heat magazine something worth reading as opposed to the glossy loo roll that it is actually also i've noticed that there is a middle class majority that seems to dictate trends within the country such as popularity of music and tv programmes, lost being a good example of hype over nothing to special, i've also noticed that this middle class generalisation in the media continues to politics to the point where journolists basically write labour good tories bad....its pathetic any way i wonder if anyone else has noticed this....

If you really are 19 then you will learn that the vast majority of people aren't that fooled by the popular press as they get older. I agree that as an over view that is the way the country seems but the older and more experienced and cynical that life makes you the more you can pick up a copy of Heat (to use one of your examples) and read it as a bit of escapism and then get on with real life with an undertanding of world issues and the knowledge that the press don't rule everyone's minds like they wish/think they do and we do have our own opinions on everything.

For a nineteen year old I would say you were very observant. Few working-class MPs reach the top of the ladder in politics, the House of Commons is full of lawyers and career politicians who have graduated in politics at various universities. Currently in the media it is Labour warts and all, but if the Tories win the next election it will revert again and so the story continues, only money really talks in politics......

i have noticed this, but those of us who have noticed are one of the few and there's not a damn thing we can do about it because people would rather listen to the media hype than what really goes on. we are fed garbage by the media everyday, and we don't complain until we read something we don't like. then we start spitting it out until they tell us something good again. the fact is we are like zombies when it comes to civilization. we follow the herd and play along until someone offers a better situation, but at the same time that's life. society never seems to think for themselves and are happy for the government to lead them

yes you are right. Those in power want it to stay that way too. If people weren't so celebrity obsessed and took notice of what the politicians where doing, they might want to start protesting about it.

Feel the public low brow rubbish and they can do whatever they want as not enough people will notice.

That's why politics is not taught that much in schools as well. If kids grew up knowing about it, they might not be too happy with those in power.

An average Briton tend to show more interest in world politics.

An average American DOES NOT know where Iraq is on the map of the world but DOES know the name of Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's daughter !!!
