To become self sufficient with respects to natural resources. Learn to use renewable resources to replace commodities that consist of non-renewable resources.............for example, Christopher Somerville's lab at Stanford has been using genetically engineering plants to produce some of the compounds used in the making of plastics.

Various companies around the world are looking at ways to use various grains as alcohols to fuel cars, homes, factories, etc

Innovations like these will help to perpetuate the long term survival of mankind on this planet

Survival!

that is the ultimate quest. everything else we do, including trying to achieve power, money and religion, is only a way to ensure our survival.

a lot of things that others mentioned: Expansion onto other planets, health, world peace, understanding, environmental protection, even decimating the human population are ALL aimed at one unsaid goal : Survival.

power, money and religion are slightly selfish versions of the same instinct. they ensure or promise survival of my decendants (even maybe at the cost of lives of other people).
