Put boric acid (powder) all around the crevices in the house. It kills them and other insects. For ants you usually need to mix some bait traps of boric acid with peanut butter or honey so they'll eat it.
The problem with fast acting poisons is that ants will panic and split into another colony when they can connect immediate death to certain area. The boric acid is slow acting so they don't panic and split the mound.

We had a black ant problem at a local convenience store I worked at and I found the best thing to kill them and get rid of them for good is bleach. The bleach stops them instantly, and destroys their scent trail. If they cannot find their trail, they cannot find their way back into your home. Also, I would say about once a week place some bleach at your entranceways so as to kill any possible trails they have attempted to create. It is also a good idea to keep any trash or food crumbs away from your entranceway, and out of your kitchen. Black ants LOVE sugar...hence their nickname "sugar ants." So keep all sweet stuff cleaned up. Colored mulch also attracts black ants because when the mulch gets wet, it emitts a sweet-sticky gum that the black ants just can't get enough of, so steer clear of colored mulches. Use Cola...it burns those buggers alive...also try vinegar(apple cider)...you can also mix the vinegar with baking soda and let it fizz in the areas where the ants are(repeat off and on for a week they will be gone).

safest way is baby powder. It is fine enough that they track it back to the nest and eventually they suffocate. Just put a little out where they are 'congregating', then put it around the edges of the walls.

Those have been all over my house. You need to clean the floors and spray stuff to kill them.
