Yes, they can. Normally they will reimburse you for some of it but they don't have to. Save your receipts, you can claim the uniforms on your taxes.

There are many ways to look at your question.
I would not want to pay anything out of pocket to get a job. However, if you really need the work, if you like what you are being hired to do, and/or if the pay is great, then the purchase of a uniform is not a burden but an opportunity.
Does the company buy the uniform and then deduct a percentile of the expense each pay period or are you fronting the expense yourself?
The professional uniforms of a cop or fire fighter are very expensive. I was a volunteer cop and was excited to purchase my uniform, leather and gun; and had to borrow the money because I worked at minimum wage for JC Penney. It was worth it though, as I had a chance to help others part time.

Generally, if a uniform (something like the brown uniforms of UPS) is required by the employer they pay for it.
If it is "suggested" then the employee has the option of buying it or not. In some cases, the employer contributes a percentage toward the cost.

ABSOLUTELY ! but the better companies boot in a little money towards these uniforms so you dont have the whole $$ burden yourself.

Yes, they can. You may be able to deduct the cost on your income taxes, if you itemize. Along with any other out of pocket expenses for your job.
