use substitution. you put 40x in place of y in the first equation.
so you get
40x=300+3x
add -3x to both sides so that you have x's on one side and real numbers on the other
which would make it
37x=300
then divide both sides by 37
because 37 does not evenly go into 300, just leave it in an unsimplified fraction
so x is
300/37
to find y our miltiply that number by 40
this is a yucky answer
12000/37
so yeah, you can make those diecimals if you like.

Always check your work. If you insert y=40 into the second equation, you get x=1. If you insert x=1 into the first equation, you get y=303--a contradiction because y cannot be both 40 and 303 at the same time. So, you did something wrong.

You could try substitution. The second equation gives x=y/40. Insert this into the first equation to get y=300+3y/40. This gives (y-3y/40)=300 or 37y/40=300. Multiply both sides by 40/37 to get y=300 (40/37). You then just do the arithmetic.

Once you have y, x is easy to find by substituting y into the second equation.

[Where did you get the 5.5? Note that y=300+5.5x contradicts the first equation y=300+3x. When solving math problems, just be patient, and follow the rules, one by one, step by step. Do only what you are taught to do. Do not invent rules.]

if ur question is y=300 +3x , and y =40x
it will be so easy 300 +3x=40x
so x= 300/37 and y =40*300/37

but if ur question is y=300+3xy=40x with y=300+5.5x and y=40
it will be
300+3xy-40x=300+5.5x then y= 40
(3*40)x-40x-5.5x=0 i don know may b u should be more spacified

Algebra HW, eh?
y=300+3x
y=40x
40x=300+3x
37x=300
x=300/37

since both expressions are equal to y, equate them as in:
300+3x=40x
subtracting 3x on both sides, 300=37x
or x=300/37

and y=40*300 / 37

work out the arithmetic

it is easy . instead of "y" in the first one put 40x and then move the 3x to the left . it will be 37x=300
and then x=300/37 ! i guess you can do the rest !! good luck and do your homework on your own !
