A crime is an action that is illegal according to the penal code (criminal code). A civil wrong is an activity which is actionable under the civil code.

Sometimes an action can be actionable under both.

For instance, if you slug your neighbor, you can be charged with assault and battery (crime). He can also sue you (civil wrong).

Sometimes a civil wrong is not a crime though. For instance, rear ending someone in your car is not a crime, it's a mistake, but you can be sued for it under the civil code.
