Secret CIA prisons, attempts to legalize torture, imprisonment in the gulag of Guantanamo Bay without charges or trial... what is the line we absolutely will not cross as Americans in the name of homeland security? The question here isn't "the terrorists are doing worse." We know that. We aren't terrorists, we're better than they are. Aren't we? To what degree do we as a nation allow the evil we are supposed to be fighting?

leogirl, I served my country for 6 1/2 years in the Navy. I don't think it's my backbone that's at issue here. Have you fought for your country? Who is the true coward, the one who serves and questions or the one who hides behind the troops and follows blindly?

Oh, and you didn't answer the question.

lordkelvin, it isn't terrorist rights, it's HUMAN rights. These are people. Vile people, but people nonetheless, subject to the same basic rights as all people. And who are these terrorists? All muslims? All Arabs? How do we know who it's okay to torture?

Maybe it's not okay to torture anyone, for any reason.

as an old person who has seen the decades go by with different parties in the majority, this country is at its lowest point in my life where morality is concerned in the administration. Sadly enough, I have to say that we, as a nation, are justs as much terrorists as the people we call "the axis of evil"....no worse and no better....

I am ashamed of a lot of things that are going on right now. But I agree we haven't been bombed lately either. If the US had a different mindset on Nation Building we might not be where we are now. We can not be the worlds conscience or thought police.

Look at how the Israelis live and have since the State was born. They have Mossad, we have the CIA and the FBI. They, the people allow a lot of latitude to their government for their safety and for the future of our Country we may have to also.

Another thought for all the Bush haters....... Ever considered what might have gone on, covert, prior to his administration? The Government has NEVER told us all it does. Could it be that Mr. Bush in his own "cowboy" way is just being more truthful?

B/c you mention Homeland Security I'll presume you're talking about islamic extremist terrorism. You can label it as anything you like, holy war, jihad, pay-back, it is still terroistic in nature and are acts carried out against untrained, unwarned, unarmed civilians. We are embroiled in a "war" which some can argue we started, we supported, and we funded and even fueled it. But it cannot be denied, we are in it! At what point do we, as a nation, get serious about stopping it? When do we put a halt to this "evil" directed against us? When do we, as a nation, decide no line exists that we aren't going to cross, let alone talk about what lines we're not supposed to?

Your Q intones somehow there is a national soul which has a value, a worth. Let me ask you this; Without safety how long do you suppose our soul will live?

Like all promises made few are kept by politicians .
I see very little that we can do to prevent terrorists from attacking America except to leave them alone and respect the wishes of the leaders .
I do not think they have asked for land of ours or even money or anything except to be left alone .So for the sake of argument lets just offer them what they want .
Release all the prisoners we hold, with-draw our embasseies from foriegn lands they ask us to and give into the demands .What harm will it do .
I would not feel bad giving them what they ask for if we could then live in peace with them .
Crossing the line and assisting in the over-throw of other nations is part of our problem .We have not commited direct acts of terror but we have supported them .
So why knowing we supported terrorists do we deny it all the time .
When the shoe is on the other foot it does not feel so good does it .Terrorists want very little it seems and leaving them alone is the key to getting them to stop attacking others .

Schmorgan,
We ARE in fact bettter than this. However right now, if it were not for the pesky & inconovenient First Amendment rights as well as the 5th and 6th Amendments to the Constitution, we'd be that much nearer to being a police state - if the Bush adminsitration was not kept in check. We are allowing the use of fear to deprive us of civil liberties.

It is a good question but unfortunately it is irrelevant. The promise of safety is a false one so all the USA's corruption of its soul is for naught. Its a shame really that America couldn't have taken the high road and done some good instead of perpetuating evil and death to innocents. There was so much potential! Sad! Shame on USA! Shame on Bush! And after all that there is no safety anyway; if someone wants to harm you they will.

Not the soul, you are talking about our civility.

Yes, when you fight an enemy, and the enemy plays by no rules, then why play by rules yourself. Yes you can still win, but it will be much more costly, and the death of many more people. Its been shown in Vietnam. Aircraft could not fire at Vietnamese until they were fired at. Now, what kind of logic is that?

oh good grief, continue writing the terrorist bill of rights... you seem to think that we will be better off living under their rule.

playtoofast... you're living in the Twilight Zone if you think the terrorist will ever leave us alone... unless you want the whole country to convert to Islam...
