The smart ones always knew it was round from having spoken to other long distance sailors. The dumb ones probably don't believe it to this very day.
He realized that if the earth is round then going West might be a great shortcut to the East instead of the conventional way of sailing East which was long and dangerous. It worked out OK because he did find land in that direction, just not India that he was expecting.

Even the village idiot in Columbus' day knew that the world was round. Sailors noted that the horizon was elliptical in shape when the sun came up...this most likely happened way before Columbus. It's a myth that CC proved the earth round.

Well, if he had really sailed around the world like he started out to do, he'd have proved it. As is really happened, he ran into America and just thought he'd gone all the way around, so he didn't really prove that there wasn't an edge of the earth he'd have fallen off of if he'd kept going and hadn't been stopped by the land mass America, actually if I remember right, islands off the coast of America..
