The actual process places the ink under the top layer of skin. The darker the pigmentation of the skin, the more it obscures or darkens the ink color.

I just got my tattoo a week ago and when I talked to the tattoo artist and we talked about color, I asked her if she felt that they would be visible on me and she said it wouldn't be a problem. At first I was skeptical but when she did my tattoo, its in black and a light green, kind of like the shade they use on this site, it showed up perfectly. If I were you, I would stay away from dark colors like dark blue and go for brighter shades of the colors. The red/pink you mentioned sounds great. Good luck.

Skin color is determined by the amount and type of the pigment melanin in the skin. Dark skinned Blacks have eumelanin one of the factors that make their skin darker. Tattoos add color to the skin by darkening it that is why it's harder to see on dark skinned people.

If you get a color like white it shows up nice. I got a bright red on one of my tattoos and It looks more henna which is what I wanted. *sigh* But being African American, i just have to contend with not being able to have a tattoo that looks super bright.

any color is pointless on dark skin. the only thing you will be able to see is black ink - and even then its hard to see.

if you are going to get one - just get it in black.
