According to wikipedia - you got the story exactly right and it was presented in Plato's "Symposium". One of the characters (Aristophanes) tells it during a discussion about love.

This was referenced in "Annie on my Mind" but the author said it was a Greek philosopher. She was rather vague and I was mad, because it seemed like an intriguing myth. Sorry I don't have the answer but thanks for asking! I had completely forgotten about it. I will ask my English teacher and try to get back to you with an answer if one is not given.

If I recall correctly, this was told among a group of philosophers in Athens. It has no particular name, and was part of a simple game in which each philosopher took turns suggestings fanciful creation stories. Unfortunately, I can't specifically remember the name of the philosopher who told it.
