Some places you can use * star or the # pound or both and of course hitting zero. I was trying to call to check something on my ATT service. There was no category for it. You could not use 0 pound # or star *

I got really frustrated. Then the automatic system hanged up on me. I did get through but having to lie to the automated system.

UGH! "I'm sorry, I couldn't understand you? Do you want technical support, customer service, or service in spanish? Please say technical support, customer service, or spanish."

Start shouting that you want to talk to a PERSON! LIVING BEING! HUMAN! BREATHING INTELLIGENT CREATURE!

Also, if you do get a person, and they want to transfer you, tell them that you got lost in the voice system, and that it doesn't work, and if you sound polite but thoroughly exasperated, they will make sure you are transferred to a person and not a computer.

Hit 0. It usually takes you to a real person right away.
