The wireless Internet "signal" is sent from wireless Internet transmitters or relay stations to your roof-top receiver (CPE). From there, the signal travels through a CAT5e network cable to your router. Unlike dialup Internet access, you wireless Internet connection is "always on" and does not require you to login to the network each time like dialup Internet. There needs to be line-of-sight from the CPE and a transmitter. The signal does not travel through trees, buildings, hills, etc. The view between the CPE and transmitter must be free and clear of any obstructions.
No telephone line required ;) good luck

There are effectively two parts to this question. Two types of wireless connectivity are available. 1. You can have a cable/dsl connection to your house and then hook up a wireless Router to this so that you don't have to run cables around your house. In this system the Telco company can advise whether cable/dsl is available to your property; there are limitations with respect to distance from the nearest Telco switch. 2. Alternatively you can buy a special modem and hook up to a wireless broadband connection although this service does have more severe restrictions on availability. The link below displays wireless coverage and has numerous links to companies which provide these services in the Illinois area. I'm in Australia so I'm not sure what you'll pay for one of these modems but I'm guessing around US$100. Cheers

In order to "get wireless on a laptop" you need two pieces of hardware. 1) a router and 2) a wireless card adapter for your laptop. in the source field i will put a link for a router.
if your laptop doesn't have built in wireless than it is probably a really old laptop (5 years old) and you should probably update the whole computer. But if you still want to put on wireless here is a link for a usb wireless adapter and a pcmcia adapter. the usb adapter fits into a usb port while the pcmcia adapter fits in the long thin slot on the side of you laptop. the pcmcia card is probably better (better reception more power) but both will do the job.
