I would guess the 'insult' is calling someone's mother an imagrint.

I think the basic of the insult is rooted in racisim. Basicly the view that we're better than you because you aren't like us.

IMHO, it's more of an insult to the person saying it because it makes them sound like a bigot.

An Immigrant, who is in this Country, that wants to work, must obtain a green card, in order to do so.

Just because they get a "visa" doesnt permit them to work. With out the green card, they are not "able" to legally work, and if they are caught with out it, then the Government can fine huge amounts of money to the firm that is letting them work illegally.

If they come across the border, illegally, then they dont get green cards, because they didnt come in through proper immigration channels, and obtain one.

I wouldnt get the "joke" either. Having a green card, only means your from a different Country, and not born in the US. Its not a "slander" on anyone, nor a disgrace. So, I would not bother listening to that "program", if it makes fun of people who are from another Country, or ethnic origin.

And, your just at the right age to learn all this, and avoid the pit falls of prejudices, and hatred. Every person, is a cherished gift from our LORD. You, me, and everyone else has worth and values, lets respect each of them and everyone.

I wish you well..

Jesse

Actually, Woodworking's answer is correct and incorrect.
You can work on a Visa (a T4 visa is a work visa)
You can also get a Work Permit before you get your green card and get a Social Security number and work.
But he is correct that it is something that immigrants get. However, it allows them to stay in the country (not just work here)

Well I don't understand why it was so funny either... but I didn't get to hear the entire joke. Why don't you tell us what they said leading up to that joke?
