As the spider cannot fly or jump that far - does it attach the first thread at one end then walk down the fence, over to the tree, up the trunk then attach the other end 10ft away?

Well, they do not jump. The most any spider can jump is a few inches, not ten feet. Probably the best explanation I have heard (I still need to research it for myself) is that they let some silk fly in the wind and attach to a random point. They then work from there.

Some spiders can jump, and they dont fly but they do a neat trick they spin a thread on a fence or tree and jump off and the wind lifs them away.
Not know what type of spider you are talking about i can not say much more.

The usual method is that the spider spins a thread
out into the air, letting air currents carry it until it
catches on something. The spider then walks
across the thread strengthening it as it goes,
until it is strong enough to support the web.
