I don't know about anyone else, but my family has always been free. I'm aware that many black Americans did have ancestors who were slaves, but not all of us.

jerseysweety, I AM sure of myself. On both my mom's and my dad's side of the family, they were free. I did a report in school about my culture, that's how I know.

And I questioned both my mom's family and my dad's about how they came here, etc, etc, etc.

And C K I know what you mean. My best friend is Irish white, and I've never once thought or assumed that her-or any other white friend I had in the past, for that matter-family owned slaves.

Why do some black people assume all white peoples ancestors owned slaves?

Mine were part of the underground railroad.

Probably because they don't know their history.

I'm white and I had slave ancestors. A lot of the Irish came to America as endentured servants to pay their way to America. They were basically slaves of the people who paid their way over to America. They and several generations after them were "slaves" of the family. Yeh, there were white slaves, too. And we don't ask for reparations.

How do you know that your family has always been free? Perhaps you had some enslaved ancestors in other areas of the world, for example in the Caribbean, like mine, or even back in Africa. Not that we should make assumptions about anyone, but you sound very sure of yourself.

Asking your parents ONLY doesn't assure you that you were not a decedent of slaves either. There were free blacks, but there were free blacks who were freed before slavery was over also and unless you do an intensive search of your family's genealogy you can't be sure that you ancestors were always free. But I do agree all blacks were not decedents of slaves.

I have plenty of African American friends, and I've never even thought about any of them having slave ancestors.

You make a good point, but you must realize that part of the Black agenda has, in the past, preyed on White conscience to help bring equality...not a bad trade at all.

Because the majority of African Americans were slaves.

There are some black people who came over after slavery was over. I've known some who are from Nigeria, Ethiopia, and other countries. And what about Jamaicans? So you have a point there.
