This is where we get to prove why people call us fonts of useless knowledge. Well, I'm game.
*We all know Einstein, his famous equation E=mc^2, and his theories of Relativity. But, what was he actually awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for? Nope, not either theory of Relativity, but he won for his work on the Photoelectric Effect--or the property of some materials to turn light photons into electrical energy.
*When did the US really intend upon entering WWII? Well, don't know for sure, but the Manhattan Project was officially chartered/created on Dec 6, 1941--yep a day BEFORE the attack on Pearl Harbor.
*Everyone now knows it is a farce, and one would think all real scientific geniuses should know it wouldn't work, but Sir Isaac Newton practiced alchemy.
*We all know Neil Armstrong was the first man on the Moon. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin went with him. Who was that other guy on the mission? Michael Collins had to stay up and fly over the Moon instead of getting to stroll across its surface.
*There is more pressure at the point of a high heel shoe worn by an average height/weight woman than there is in a square inch at the base of the Empire State Building.
*The Eiffel Tower was at one point being considered for demolition and was going to be sold as scrap metal.
*Coca-cola got its name because it orginally contained cocaine and was sold as a curative for what ails ya.
*Rumor has it that the reason a music CD plays the length of time it does is because the then head dude at Sony wanted something which he could listen to his favorite symphony without having to change (or flip) records. Guess if you're that "important" even changing records on a phonograph is tedious.
* The first computer bug was in fact a bug. It was a moth that had gotton inside the case and shorted out a circuit board.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, sorry.
