A Red Card means he is out of the current match and that team plays short for the rest of the game, AND he does not play the next game, at a minimum .

In order to be suspended for more than one game depends on the severity of the foul and the circumstances involved, and what the league rules are. A player could conceivably miss an entire season if the situation warrants. I have only witnessed this once, and that was at the U-19 level of play.

A red card means that player is ejected from the game and cannot be replaced by another player nor can he return to the game. The number of games he will miss depends on the offence that took place that warranted the red card and this is determined by the FA (Football Association). There was one player who was out for 13 games for deliberately elbowing someone.

The red card means your out for the game; and up for suspension of a number of games. Its usually just 1 game, but if its a serious offense it could be more than one game. For example, Daniele De Rossi, in the world cup game against the U.S.
