Covering pens with polymer clay is a very easy beginner project that gives you some great results. Use inexpensive stick pens like white Bic pens. With a pliers, gently pull the tip and ink cartridge out of the pen and set aside. You will need a sheet of clay the length of the pen barrel and as wide as the circumference of the pen. Use any color you wish but be sure to condition the clay well first. Once conditioned, the clay is rolled out to a thickness of about 1/8" and cut in a sheet the size mentioned above. Wrap around the barrel of the pen and smooth the seam with your finger until no longer visible. You can now texturize the clay using rubber stamps or anything with texture that you don't ever intend to use for food. If the surface is large enough, you can roll the pen gently over the surface otherwise just push details into the surface gently. Before baking, add color to the pen by rubbing the raised surface with your finger dipped in pearl pigment powder, ultra-fine glitter or even colored chalk, trying to avoid the depressions. This will make your designs stand out more. Bake according to package instructions. Once cool, replace the ink cartridge and the pen is ready to use. Once you learn how to make canes, you can cover pens with your original designs for unique gifts.

The nice thing about polymer clay is that you can make almost anything with it. As an easy learning project, you could make beads, just roll log strands of clay and cut into small workable pieces and roll between you fingers to form a ball. using a pin or other fine shart object, gently poke through the clay to create the hole. Place on baking sheet and bake as directed, reducing baking times for smaller objects. If beads are not something of interest to you, think of something you would like and work with it. The nice thing about this stuff is you can make cool keychains and lapel pins, jewelry or anything small. Try doing a web search for some ideas or look in a craft or book store for a book of ideas to get you started. It's really easy once you let your imagination and creativity flow. Best of luck.
