It depends mainly on what you are going for: if you want a modern, clean and cool look then silver can be used (again this applies to silver wear without coloured stones b/c then it depends on what kind of craftsmanship is involved, it could have an antique feel) if the lines are simple or you can wear white gold. If you want a warmer undertone and your skin is naturally lightly tanned or olive, gold will complement you (again depending on your design jewelry, gold can be classy or tacky).
Look at your colour accessories too (details on handbag and shoes) and whatever you choose, don't mix gold and silver at the same time.

Plus silver is cheaper :D If i was you, then i would go with your gut. don't forget, we can't actually see your dress OR your jewellery, so trust yourself and be confident. Silver or white gold!!! i switched my wedding set, because yellow gold just doesnt look right with some colors. Plus silver and white gold, even platinum, can be mixed way more easily. Go with silver.

What kind of black dress are u wearing is it a party dress or u going for a wedding. with black usually try to wear a not to bright silver chain with a pearl hanging pendant or a small pearl necklace....also it depends on the color of the skin ..it u wear too much makeup it may throw off the black dress u are wearing and just a small ladies watch with a black purse red color

I'd say GOLD...i totally recommend it!!! i know silver may look classy but GOLD with black dresses these days is stylish...

i tried it once at a party...and all my friendz liked the combination of the two colors together ;)!!

but in the end...it depends on what you are more comfortable with!

It depends on your skin. Normally, if you look good in blues and pink (cool tones), you will look better in silver. If you look good in reds and oranges (warm tones), you will look better in gold. Pick the jewelry that looks best with your skin tone, either silver or gold. They both match the dress.
