The difference is that a crime is something done against a rule or law written and created by a governing body. A sin is something that is not necessarily a crime but something done against a belief of sorts be it religious, spiritual or moral. A crime is not necessarily a sin, especially when a person doesn't have certain beliefs instilled in them like God, a greater being or right and wrong.

The two can be synonymous. For example, to murder someone is both a crime and a sin. Crime is generally used to mean a transgression of state law, whereas sin means a transgression of the laws of God or nature. Sin means karma or more technically, vikarma. This is activity that takes you deeper into entanglement in the complexities of material life and hence further from realization of your spiritual nature and your relationship with the Lord. So sin is any activity based on ignorance of your spiritual nature which further covers you with ignorance and takes you further from the Absolute Truth.

Crime is an Act committed against what society (people in authority) have defined as the law.

Sin is either a act, or in some cases a mere thought or feeling, that goes against God's law, as men interpret God's law to be.

In many cases, crime and sin overlap, since the main purpose of religion is to bolster society's secular interests. No one cvan ever have enough police around to control everyone, so religion gets inside their heads to convence them that they'd better not do what they want, because they will get punished by God, even if the police don't find proof against you.

A crime is a subset of actions considered to be sins. Sins can be more subtle and be related to preconditions for a crime. An example would be the sin of envy. You may become envious of somebody else's property. Your envy may eventually drive you to steal. The envy and the stealing are sins but only the stealing is a crime.

There's considerable overlap. A crime (breaking the law) is almost always a sin as well (exceptions: littering, jaywalking, etc.)
But a sin is less often a crime ( lying (not under oath), many pre-marital - and post-marital - sexual relations,
vanity, sloth, gluttony, pride, etc.
What defines both crimes and sins can vary quite a bit, depending on the locale (crime) and on the religion (sin.)

A serious infraction against HUMAN law is a crime.
An infraction against DIVINE law is a sin.

Therefore crime is always a sin as well, but a sin is not necessarily a crime.
