...becuase of the way it makes you feel! You've never done anything in your life for any other reason!

The meaning of life is to get as many positive emotions from life as you can (happiness, respect, love, peace with the world, challenge, diversity) whilst minimizing the negative ones (pain, guilt, regret, hurt, loss, frustration).

Some people will say something like "people who work in a warehouse, don't do it becuase of the way it makes them feel!" But they do! - it represents their best opportunity of minmizing bad emotions (having no money, no job, no banter, unable to provide for themselves/family etc) and giving them happy ones (having a paycheque at the end of the week, work colleagues, respect, challenege etc). Otherwise why would they do it?

Do you agree?

Strongly disagree. People sometimes have to do things out of necessity, regardless of how it makes us feel.

Life is choices, not feelings. We make choices everyday. Choices that set us on a course that takes us places. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. when we want to change a destination, we make a new choice that sets us on a new course.

Sometimes, enroute to your destination, a storm may rise-up and toss your boat. But, if we are prepared, we are able to weather the storm and navigate back on course when the storm is over until we reach our desired shore.

Sometimes, we choose a bad course (ie, drugs, crime) and we reach a shore and our taken captive (jail, prison.) or a storm comes that we aren't prepared for and it wrecks our boat and life falls apart for a time.

But, as long as we are still alive, we can rebuild our boat learning from our mistakes and setting sail for better destinations.

We set a course by the friends we choose to have and the things we allow to influence our behavior. If we hang-out with the wrong people, we have just set a course of destruction that the breath of the croud is the wind driving your boat.

Choose your course wisely, my friend and your journey will be an adventure to remember!

It is not a very insightful explanation. It explains everything, thereby it explains nothing. It provides nothing new in terms of knowledge.

Assume that people only act to maximize positive emotions while minimizing negative emotions. Why do two different people act differently in any given situation? Your answer would be, well one the one is acting to maximize her positive emotions while minimizing negative emotions, while the other is acting to maximize his positive emotions while minimizing negative emotions. Gee, that explains a lot. It does not go far to explain why the two act differently.

More sightful questions might be: What provides positive or negative emotions to people? Why would one person find something positive while another might find it negative? How does do the values/norms of ones social environment play a part in determining what is positive and what is negative?
