or should the electrode be to the right or left of the specified mark?

Whatever you are gapping it at should fit under the ground side of the plug to the center electrode. It is all quite easy.

you set this by using the center electrode,as a starting point,,and the distance from it to the end of the curve tip is the setting range,,sometimes the curve part is not always in line with the electrode,,it wont hurt to align it up,,good luck with it,,hope this help,s

it doesn't matter the tolerance is loose enough to allow either. I gap it to the closest point where ever it is on the plug because that's where the arc will occur.

What are you building? a space shuttle. I don't think .002" in either direction will make much of a difference. Now if it's .035" and you go .060", you might have a problem.
