i find anymore when i go to sign in i have a hard time connecting on my instant messenger.having to try several times to get it to sign in i find myself to wonder what is going on.have i done something without realizing it? or is there another problem i'm not seeing?can someone tell me what i'm missing here?

If u can sign in already after several attempts, that means your program is working and firewall is already enabled to allow access.
How about surfing the internet ? any problem ?
if same applied to surfing, I guess the problem is on your ISP side, contact them.
another reason is your phoneline which gives unstable connection with your ISP.

if u r having any security softwares like zone alram etc try to give the access right of the messenger ur using

check your internet connection or re-download the messenger. if all fails, try a new one. like AIM

Have you deleted your messenger and re-installed it? Might do the trip.
