It isn't never a life sentence, just it isn't usually - it's basically just the wrong term.
The problem with telling someone in their mid 20s that they never have any hope of leaving jail is that they then have no incentive to behave in prison. Even if they know the chances of them leaving are slim, it's still something to aim at and work towards.

If you get a life sentence then when you are released you are on licence and can be sent back for any slight issue. Recently a man with terminal cancer who had murdered someone was rearrested for swearing at a nurse.
Also this means that people have the chance to be productive in society. Not many people murder again after being in prison for 20 years. Those that do are usually mentally ill and should be sectioned.
If there is a chance of getting out then prison behaviour is better (contrats US to UK prison riots) and does not put the warders at such level of risk.

I have worked in the criminal justice field for over 6 years and it doesnt make sense to me either. Every state has different meanings for a life sentence. In most states a life sentence means they are ellegible for parole after a certain number of years, like around 40. The state I work for now, has natural life, meaning, they will spend the rest of their natural life in prison.

Indeed it should. In the UK, after the 20 years (or whatever) they serve in prison, they remain on licence and can be locked up again for breaching any of their licence conditions. So technically, they are never entirely free but this is still not a very satisfactory arrangement.

some US states do see life sentence as a life sentence
the fact that a life sentence usually isn't for life is due to the belief is that people can still repent their sins and change their ways

life means that even after their release they are on licence for the rest of their lives. they will habe to report to a probation officer once a month till the day they die. also if they want to go on holiday they have to get permission.
But most importantley they only have to be suspected of comitting an offence (even non payment of fine) they can then be recalled to prison for an indefinate period. this will never leave them, that is the extent of a life sentence, in effect you are never free!
And of course if they are not well behaved in prison then they will stay in prison for life, early release is earnt.

I dono about south africa or the final feeling for the human beings there. yet in my opinion, we'd want to consistently trust contained in the capacity for human beings to make a substitute of their existence. If we lose this idea then even the slightest mistake from someone to a unique turns into violent and under no circumstances finishing. we must trust that folk can substitute, human beings make blunders. Plus parole is not in basic terms given to each person. the guy might want to be on sturdy habit for years of their time period to be even considered for parole. the guy might want to might want to authentic regret to also be licensed for parole. in spite of the undeniable fact that the numerous difficulty i prefer to assert is, trust that poeple can substitute, human beings makes mistake and some sense remorseful and regulate to develop right into a significantly better individual. you would possibly want to consistently enable a second possibility to someone who prefer to regulate.
