Because it makes the customer think the car is better than one with 100 on the speedometer. Its ego that we wanna go fast and all cars wont do what the speedometer has on it either.

First off, even if the speedometer goes up to 140, the car is never going to go that fast. Most new cars sold in the USA are electronically limited to less than 110 MPH.

Mostly, it's an ego thing with new car buyers. Back in the 1970's, the US Government declared that automobile speedometers could only read up to 85 MPH. Sales dropped like a rock, and auto manufacturers claimed that their customers wouldn't buy "slow" cars, even though most of them would never drive much more than the (then) national 55 MPH speed limit. The "slow" speedometers only lasted a couple of years, even though the national speed limit stayed at 55 MPH for many years more.

The facetious answer: So's I can get to work in the morning.

The serious answer: The extra power might possibly be able to get a car to 140 mph. However, the extra power is for passing, maintain (legal) speed when going up hills, carrying full loads and if the driver is well trained, to accellerate out of trouble spots (like dodging a car bearing down on them at right angles, etc.).

They like to appeal to a person who wants a manly car capable of going at those speeds. That way when the guy sits in it at the auto showroom he can be mentally saying "VROOM VROOM" and have a fantasy that he is a race car driver, which would clinch the sale.

That is the kind of thinking that has gotten Ford and GM close to bankruptcy. None of this easy to park, easy to get good mileage, relaxing to drive, just VROOM VROOM thoughts as they drive through the city traffic jams

The US isn't the only country that these vehicles are driven in, the Autobahn doesn't have a speed limit...some of the cars here even trip out at 102 or 106-they won't even go past that

some places in the world you can drive that fast if you want. also some people take their cars to tracks and race them, also that's what the car is capable of.
