An attorney doesn't have to be a member of the BAR. It doesn't really mean he is bad. The Florida Bar is an organization that members can elect to be in by paying a annual fee. You can have bad attorneys that are members. Sometimes with lawyers its a matter of word of mouth. I often look at it like this. Pay attention to the flow of traffic in and out of the lawyers office. If you notice that everytime you ride by there and the office is empty there is a problem. You have to trust your instincts when it comes to lawyers. What I would recommend is when you met with him see how he is ready to work for you. If you want to check up on an attorney look for the number to the state disciplinary board and check to see if he has ever had problems. Good Luck with the divorce.

It means only that he can't practice law in Florida. This is really only a problem if you are trying to do your divorce in Florida. If so, you need to find a lawyer that is a member of the Florida Bar. If you are in New York a lawyer on the Florida Bar won't be of much help. Just find one that is on the Bar of whatever state your divorce is being heard in.

You want to get a lawyer who is a member of the bar in the state you live in (I'm assuming Florida). You can call the Florida Bar Association and check on a lawyer & their status with the bar and you should also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they've had any complaints lodged against them.Good Luck

If he is not a member of the Florida Bar and you are getting a divorce in Florida, it would be my guess he would not be a good lawyer for you.On the other hand if you are getting a divorce in in Georgia and your lawyer is not a member of the Florida Bar, it doesn't mean anything.
