Cars and Ashtrays.....why aren't they standard anymore.?

My wife and I were having a talking about where to put something I bought her. I told her to keep it in the ashtray of her car. She informed me that her car does not have one. That they don't put ashtrays in cars anymore. Being neither one of us are smokers I never paid any attention to this. Does your car have an ashtray? Do you know why they don't put ashtrays in cars anymore?? Have you ever heard of this??

The ashtray is optional equipment now in many cars because fewer people smoke, at least in the US, than used to.

The space is better used for other functions.

Ashtrays and cigarette lighters are not standard in all vehicles nowadays due to the fact that it saves the companies alot of money. An ashtray would cosy....let's say 4 bucks.Then you multiply that by the number of cars manufactured.$4 x 75000 cars...that's $300000 spent by the manufacturer...and that's only for one model.Notice that new cars/trucks don't even have a keyhole on the passenger side anymore??? Yup,that's another way for the manufacturer to save money.See every little thing counts,because it all adds up to something big.By the way,the manufacturers could care less if you smoke or not.So that's not part of the reason.

its optional these days so that if your not a smoker, you dont have to have an ashtray, this also helps other people from wanting to smoke in your car.
