The difference beteen 'At Night' & 'in the Night' is quite thin & subtle.

At night' is used for things / events that generally happen at the night time.

The Nocturnal animals come out only at night when people sleep.

People work all day & sleep at night.

ii) 'In the night' (means 'during the night time) is used in particular contexts.

Working in the night is said to have adverse effects on one's health ( During the night time)

In short,

'at night' is for general statements of activities

& 'in the night' is for particular activities DURING the night time.

This is how I differetiate between the two.

stevensontj's is actually correct for proper grammar. BUTT!!! Ha! I always like sticking my butt into things. Most people will understand the context as the same. It how most of us learn English. We learned to talk before we went to school this why I feel many of us not like English in school. We already now how to talk, from our perspective. Here a good example. I talk with people in other countries that learn English as a second language. Most learn British English which, I say, is more proper. They ask me questions about American English as it is different from British English. A good question I get ask a lot is; "Am I in the yard, or, on the yard"? I tell them Americans will understand what they say, but, my flowers are in the yard and I go on the yard to water them. Hope this helps.
