I thought i was only having one boy and the reason i looked so huge was because i'm skinny. But i'm having triplets and i'm set up for a home birth. Should i cancel the home birth and go for the hospital birth or should i stick to the home birthing? My husband's a surgeon and my sisters are trained midwives. What to do?

Hon you'll probably end up with a c-section -- especially if they are big. Just stick with the doctor. You don't know what could go wrong, and especially with triplets. Good luck -- I know its going to probably be hard... Just get plenty of rest -- and stay off those feet!!!

This cannot be a serious question. If your husband is a surgeon and your sisters are midwives, they will want you and your babies in the hospital. Does your surgeon husband have an OR room in your home? Is he an OB or general surgeon? Has he performed many c-sections with multiple births? Someone who is a neurosurgeon or cardiac surgeon is going to be a little rusty on delivering multiples in a surgical birth. C-section is almost a certainty. Even if two of them are vertex, one could be breech and triplets always, always come early. Average gestation is 32-24 wks, average weight 3-4 lbs. Most triplets need a few weeks in the NICU.

Besides, any health care provider with half a brain would have noticed your fundus much higher than it should be long before you got "so huge". If you are seeing a doctor in an office, with the advent of in-office ultrasounds and dopplers, multiple gestations are usually noted before the second trimester.

I dint want to sound like an expert but since triplets are almost always born early and by c-section it would probably be better in a hospital environment.Talk to the midwives but also see an OB/GYN so you can make an informed decision. It may be a wonderful experience to have a home birth, but there are a lot of risks involved with a multiple pregnancy and you want to give the babies the best start they can possibly have.Good luck!

Honey, just because you have a family that knows what to do in a medical emergency, it doesn't change the fact that you don't live where all the necessary medical life-saving equipment is. It's no good knowing how to perform a c-section if all you have to hand is the kitchen knife.
I recommend cancelling the home birth and going to hospital to be on the safe side.

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy, and also for the birth!

I think I would opt for the hospital. I don't think I have ever seen triplets born all vaginally. Chances are you will end up with a C section and if you are already at the hospital it would be easier than having to rush there after 1 or 2 are already out. That means splitting up your babies cause there is no way you would want to leave them at home. plus, they are usually born pretty early and may require extra oxygen or something. I would just do the hospital thing. Think of your babies health :)

If you feel that your family can safely deliver the babies, then you could try a home birth, but I don't think I would personally. Multiples are a little more risky than single births and every minute you have to wait for an ambulance and then the ride to the hospital could make a huge difference.

Also in the book "Girlfriends' Guide to Baby Gear" there is a section on how to get free products if you are having multiples, maybe it will help you since you were suprised by the number of babies. Good luck.

Usually when it's multiple children you will have to give birth in the hospital. I know a friend was set up for a home birth and when she found she was having twins she had to give birth at the hospital.

wow.. I would have the baby in the hospital.. but have all your family and hubby there. there can be complications with a home birth.. that you cannot deal with at home.. I had twins.. and I decided to let the doctors "do with me what they will" so to say. The health of you and your babies is the most important thing. plus they will be here early.. most likley.. and will need the support of the NICU. they say for each additional baby you can delivery up to three weeks early.. I delivered three weeks early.. but I wouldnt take any chances.. if your baby is born unable to breathe correctly.. a NICU can aid your baby.. but they would need help right away to avoid brain damage.. you know all this, though! :) Good luck.. I am very excited for you.. but I dont envy ya. it will not be easy.. stay strong.

I don't know any midwife who would allow you to have a home birth with triplets. You will need to have a C-Section. The babies will probably be born around 32-34 weeks and will need to be monitored for a couple of weeks depending on how early they are.

Are you even allowed to have a home birth with multiples? I think I would personally do a hospital birth, but you may not even have a choice.
