Beyond telling you that it has to do with decadence, the contempt for morals and convention by the wealthy, and "old" money's refusal to accept "new" money, I never really figured out what Fitzgerald was trying to say. What I did figure out was that it's boring as hell and made the conscious decision never to pick up anything else Fitzgerald wrote.

Don't read the cliff notes, and don't watch the movie first. It's an amazing book, my second favourite of all time after A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemmingway.

The point of reading books that are a bit harder at first is to better yourself. You will be learning to read at a higher level than Harry Potter and the bonus? You get to read one of the greatest books of all time.

yes, its a great book. You need to read more than one chapter to know what is going on, although it is kind of difficult to understand some of what is going on, but if you're reading it because of a class then maybe you can discuss it when you go over it.

Spare yourself some grief reading one of America's most classic (boring and outdated) works of literature, and get the Cliff Notes.
You'll be doing yourself a huge favor.
