Ok, what we have to do would be to put all the x's in one side of the equation as so,

4x-x+3= -12 (I am sure you know that when you shift the x over, the positive and negative signs switches, + becomes -)

Then, shift the 3 over the other side as so,

4x-x=-12-3 (same principle, the idea is to make sure all the x are in one corner and to not confuse urself)

So, work the equation,

3x = -15

And x would be

x= -15/3

x= - 5

Voila!

Hummmm, seem to have a difference in answers here so maybe we'd better suggest checking the results in addition to finding the answer.

Answer -5
4(-5) +3 = -5 -12
-20+3 = -17
-17 = -17

Answer 3
4(3) + 3 = 3 -12
12 + 3 = -9
15 = -9

Answer -3
4(-3) + 3 = -3 -12
-12 + 3 = -15
-9 = -15

Good grief.

4x + 3 = x -12

94x+3)-x=(x-12)-x <- get the x's on one side
do this by subtracting x from both sides
3x + 3 = 12
(3x+3)-3=12-3 <- get all the other numbers to the other side
do this by subtracting the 3
3x = 9 <- get x by itself
3x/3 = 9/3 do this by dividing by three
x = 3

The steps for solving a linear equation are:
1. combine like terms on each side and simplify each side
2. Add or subtract to get the variable on one side
3. Add or subtract to get the constants on one side
4. Multiply or Divide to get the variable by itself.

(To determine if you add or subtract or divide or multiply, always do the opposite of whatever sign you have. For example, in the first step, the x was positive, so to move it to the other side we subtracted it.)

1) Set you problem up 4x+3=x-12
2)Subtract 4x from both -4x -4x (x--4x = 5x)
sides beacuse you want
all the x's on one side.
you do the opposite of what the 3=5x-12
sign is. Add=subtract and vs versa +12 +12
divide=mutiply and vs versa. 15=5x
3) You now have 3=5x-12
4) You then add 12 to both sides
5) which leaves you with 15=5x 15/5x=5x/5x
6) You then divide by 5x
7) 5 divided by 15 equals 3
7) Your answer is 3=x

4x+3=x-12
-4x -4x
3=5x-12
+12 +12
15=5x
15/5x=5x/5x
3=x

OK, step by step:

1. Bring all "x's" to the left side, changing the sign.
2. Bring all other parts to the right side, again changing the sign.
3. The result will be: 4x - x = -12 - 3.
4. Finish working out both sides: 3x = - 15.
5. Now divide both sides by 3 and you get your answer: x = -5

Are you with me? Good luck!

4x + 3 = x - 12
add 12 to both sides : 4x + 15 = x
subtract x from both sides : 3x + 15 = 0
subtract 15 from both sides : 3x = -15
divide both sides ny 3 : x = -5

4X+3 = X-12

First I would subtract 3 from both sides to remove the 3 from the LHS.
4X+3-3 = X-12-3
Simplify to
4X = X-15
Now subtract X from both sides to give
3X=-15
Divide both sides by 3 to give X=-5

The only way this stuff becomes intuitive is to do lots of it.

Regards, Dan.

first, get all your x's to one side and all ur real numbers to the other.
you do this by adding negitive x to both sides and negitive 3 to both sides as well
4x-x+3-3=x-x-12-3
the x's on one side cancle out and the real numbers on the other side do the same.
you get
3x=-15
divide both sides by three
and the answer is
x=-5
