The goal of sending people to the moon is valid because;
1. It is a more nobel goal than trying to spread democracy around the world - and far less likely to kill (large) numbers of people.
2. America generates more wealth than it's leaders can easily spend on basic needs (understanding that poverty and social class are an unfortunate bi-product of capitalism).
3. It would be cool to vacation in space (ok, if my kids could do it someday).
4. It is a stepping stone to more far reaching space goals - (Mars, Star Trek...).
5. The 'space' program has produced many comercialized products that we used everyday. However that programs needs a 'reason to be', travelling to the moon and other planets provides that reason, and gives the excuse for the general reseach.
6. America will continue funding the space program to some extent, there may as well be a lofty/exciting goal out there to look forward to - the international space station and space shuttle aren't exciting enough.

Hope that helps.

I do not believe that there is anything to gain from going back to the moon other than to practice for a longer flight and landing such as to Mars.

Because if they escape from prison there... they can't come back here to do any harm!!!!...

Hmmm... or... perhaps to start gathering resources from the moon... using solar energy to catapult them into space for pickup and use at the Space station...

Or... so we can develop new technologies that will benefit our lives here on earth.

Sounds rather harsh. Of course, we could always send Michael Jackson up there to perfect his moonwalk. Don't think there's enough kids up there for him though...

We need huge scientific projects to keep the high tech sector of our work force employed.

;-D One space project keeps 10,000 people employed at high salaries.
