When I travel I use my credit card for just about everything. I think about what I might want cash for: meals, souvenirs or gifts, impulse purchases. I set a limit on cash spending and bring that amount with me. If I can, I convert it to foreign currency before I leave home - it's often cheaper that way. Of course you know that cost of living is high in Japan. But ATMs are everywhere! Not to worry!

About 10 000 yen per day if you want to eat out and travel. You could live on about 4000 if you go to cheapish restaurants and don't travel too far though. 10 000yen is about 50 pounds by the way. That makes it about 1050pounds. It's expensive if you want to actually see Japan.

Arghh! I just read the answer above. Don't trust your credit card here if it's from England my sister did that as she used it a lot round Europe THEY DON'T WORK HERE! The ones she had anyway. I think she had Visa and Mastercard.

Contact me through my 360 page if you want info on Japan or Japanese language I have lived here for 5 years. I don't know Kansai though as I've never been there but I can give you general tips.

$100 a day. You can convert it online to find amt in pounds. I second that re the credit card. Bring it, but don't be surprised if you can't use it or if places won't take it. Most interesting places are "mom and pop's" and do NOT take credit cards. Credit cards are not used as extensively in Japan. That may be more cash that you need, but it's better to have too much than not enough.
