because the old west has always been romanticized by hollywood. i think clint eastwood's unforgiven is one of the few realistic portrayals of the old west. billy the kid was a ruthless killer yet he's always portrayed as a charismatic hero.
it's just hollywood hype which usually has very little to do with actual history.

I disagree with your assessment of the film. Although I find "Tombstone" to be an overall more "entertaining" film, "
Wyatt Earp" with Kevin Costner definitely gave alot more insight into the man's life. I don't think the movie portrayed him as a hero, but moreso as a very complex personality who had more than his share of not so virtuous characteristics.
For example, when it came to his marriage to the prostitute - was Maddie her name - and his relationships with his brothers wives, he was very cold-hearted and mean-spirited.

its a relative thing.....Earp was a hero to some in those days, and rightly so...costner probably had to follow the script, unless he wrote the script....many of us are glad costner didnt retire and like most of his movies...your personal opinions mean little to the rest of the world
Earps adventures, likea lot of old history has been exaggerated and has some basis of fact.

The best Wyat Earp film is Tombstone... though there will always be a debate on Earp's character, but that's what makes him and these films so interesting.
Cosnter has only made one good film (Untouchables) and I am pretty sure that was by accident.

The same reason Kurt Russell portrayed Earp in Thomstone. for the cash and Kevin Costner is still an outstanding actor / director / and producer..............................

its still debatable, some saw Earp as good lawmaker while some accused him as taking the law into his own hands

remember it was the wild west, i dont agree that he was a bully, just tough against crime, which you had to be, i see him as a hero vigilante, and no i dontthink k.costner should have retired after dances with wolves as he would never had made OPEN RANGE which is absolute CLASS

Speak for yourself - I'm glad Kevin Costner is not in retirement and hopefully, for me, not even close to being so. If you don't care for him, don't watch his movies!
