Most really good mathematicians are born with a natural ability and liking for math, but they still have to go to school a long time and take a lot of math courses.

They are both made and born. Because without the proper aptitude efforts to make someone into a mathematician would be misdirected.

Being a math tutor I have seen where anyone can be a math genius. The only things getting in the way would be a low appreciation of education, being told (lied to) they are bad in math, the student having a low self-esteem or having instructors who have low self esteem and rip on students to make themselves feel better.
A lot of the times instructors will cram methods down a students throat that either don't work or it is hard for the student when there might be an easier way. This gets them discouraged and they have a major "Math Anxiety".
In all reality I could sit down with just about anyone who was willing and I could teach them all the way through Calc (given time). Just has to be taught the right way.

I think it helps to be born with a tendancy toward doing well in math. However, when you are raised to believe that doing well in school is important, and you become interested in numbers and/or think or mathematics problems or assignments as puzzles to do, you are likely to be more successful. you need a positive attitude, drive and continued education
