Basically taxonomy. All the "methods" for telling venomous from nonvenomous (NOT poisonous) such as pupil shape, head shape etc... are just general guidelines and there are exceptions on both sides. In general it depends on the classification of snake. There's boids (boas and pythons) which are 100% nonvenomous, then there's Viperidae (rattlesnakes, other vipers) which are ALL venomous, Elapidae (coral snake, cobra, most deadly Australian snakes), which are ALL venomous. Then there's Colubridae, which encompasses basically everything else (minus some random little families for blind snakes etc...). SOME (but not all) colubrids are venomous. It's actually been discovered recently that most do in fact possess a venom. Even garter snakes! This by NO MEANS makes them dangerous to humans, as there's no way for them to inject enough to cause any adverse effects. There are NO dangerous colubrids in North America, though some people react slightly to hognose "venom." Few colubrids, such as the boomslang, are highly dangerous, while some, such as the mangrove snakes, falsewater cobras etc... have middle-of-the-road venom and delivery systems, so while they won't kill you, you may suffer some very unpleasant side effects...

If you're just looking to know how to avoid venomous snakes, your best bet is to learn about all venomous snakes in your area so you can properly identify them. If you come across a snake you aren't sure about, just leave it alone.

Poisonous snake like rattlesnakes usually have really triangular heads, but it's not a sure way to tell, because others like coral snakes have completely normal heads. And some non-poisonous snakes have triangular heads. Basically, the only way to really tell is to memorize what every single species of snake in the world looks like.

If they are non-poisonous and they bite you nothing happens except you are bitten and if it is a large snake. They will squeeze you to death.

If it a poisonous snake and it bites you. You will die or you will be in lots and lots of pain in the hospital.

One is poisonous and the other isn't (that's all I know about snakes - sorry if this doesn't help)

Venomous snakes have triangular heads, elliptical pupils, and upper jaws with fangs. They also have belly plates that extend all the way across their bodies to their blunt or rounded tails.
Non-venomous snakes have rounded heads, rounded pupils, sharp teeth and no fangs. Their belly plates are in two sections to their sharp, pointed tails.
Looking at the pupils is one of the easiest ways to tell.
