I firmly believe that the test should be designed BEFORE you teach the things to your kids. Determine which topics are most important and then create questions about it.
You can do multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, and extended responses.
Once you create the essential questions you may then create your lessons. Be sure that you are spending time teaching the kids the essential things. Some things are nice to know but will not really help the kid. Do not spend a lot of time on things that are "nice to know." Use activities that will help the students to have a concrete understanding of the essential issues.
