I don't think the books I read make me smart. I tend to forget most of what I read. I think doing puzzles makes me smarter- I'm exercising my brain like I would my body. You can also improve your brain power by doing things with the opposite hand than you normally use and by doing things in varying ways. They say you build new neuron pathways that way. I learned that watching tv- go figure.

Hi, I read all the time. I read some books for enjoyment because i like the story line and i also read technical journals for the knowledge i gain from them. As to whether reading books make you smart or not depends on what you view as being smart. You can learn alot of things from reading and studying books, depends on want you want to know about the certain subjects. If you think about it, we read things every day, be it the back of the cereal box in the morning or just this answer i'm writing. Either way, Reading doesn't hurt you to do, enjoy it and quit worrying if it is making you smarter or not.

I've already read hundreds of books, but I don't think they made me any smarter.
It's a common misconception that education makes people better. Total B.S.
Education can upgrade a mugger and turn him into an embezzler.
But cannot teach him to be a good person.
Education can turn an eneducated psycopath and otherwise harmless person, into a scientist who makes mass destruction chemical weapons for a islamic theocracy.
But I reccommend reading books for fun and information.
Just don't expect them to change your life or improve your intelligence.

I read a lot of books. I wouldn't say they increase your intelligence, per se, although they add vocabulary and you pick up writing skills. Most importantly, they let you walk around in someone's life for a while and see what's different and what's the same. I think they have the capacity to make you a more empathetic, understanding person if you let them. But it depends on what you read, really.

I believe that my actions, how I behave, determine my "smartness." The more I listen the more I learn. The more I read, the more I can begin to understand things. The more I talk, the more I have an opportunity to declare my ignorance!

I do read a lot. Reading does not make smarter. It makes you more educated. You just know more facts. Of course it depends on what you are reading too.
