When you begin to develope breast buds, (about age 10 or 11) you can be assured that your period will begin within a year or so. There is no accurate way to tell.
You document when your period STARTS (ie circle the date on a calendar). Do this for 3 or 4 months... everyone is different, but after 3 or 4 months you will see a pattern of anywhere from 21 - 30 days between the START of your periods. Don't let anyone tell you it's from the last day of your period, that doesn't work as some periods last 4 days, others last 7. So long as your periods are regular - mine are about 28 days from start to start - and they last about 3 - 5 days or so, then you are healthy.

If you are lucky you can find a pattern in your cycle (record what day you start and end for a few months to find it.) If you are like I was for the first 15 years of my cycle, you carry a pad with you all the time and hope you catch it before it ruins your clothes in the middle of history class. As a teen and in my early 20s I never had any warning, not even pms or cramps, they always came the day the period started so I had no warning.
If you have a situation like this, it is possible to take birth control pills to regulate your period, if you don't mind the hormones and the health risks they can cause.

you cant really predict it the first time. usually you dont just walk down the street and blood strarts gushing out though. youll probably notice some strange brownish stuff for a day or two before anything big happens. once you already have your period though, you can predict it by a number of things. i never pay attention to the calendar like other women do. i just notice that when i start getting angry and hungry all time, it's getting close. also, i start crying for no reason. just carry a pad or tampon around in your purse or put one in your locker to be safe. enjoy your time without your period!

you have to cound the days from period to period...starting as the first day of bleeding as day 1 then to the day before you start again...you would need a few cycle dates to get a average
