I recently went to Skiathos on holiday. Many graves had been used and the bodies removed. I read an article written about a man who lived in Skiathos and it stated that his father had been in the cemetery for 3 years. Is the grave owned for a specific time? if it is, where do the bodies go after their time is up?

As far as I know the graves are rented for a period of 3-5 years where thereafter the bones are removed and returned to surviving relatives.
What they do with them am not at all sure!!?
This is due to cremation not being practised here and therefore lack of cemetery space.

Well you have won a jackpot. I m from Skopelos the other Sporades island and Ill let you what happens. In the islands most of the times, people rent the graves for 3 years or so... They do it because they say that this is the necessary time for a body to melt. After that, in the cemetary, there is a little church which is called Osteofylakio. Is the room where they keep the bones

In Greece, if you don't own a grave - in which case it's yours for eternity - when you die you are put in the town cemetery. You stay in the grave for 3 years (until you melt). Then the bones are removed and they are put in a box, kept in a specific area of the cemetery (due to lack of space and no crimations).

The bones are moved to an ossuary to save space in the cemetery.
