And if not political correctness, just an overt attempt to be least offensive or disturbing as possible. How much is altered?

I love your question! It is sad what has happened to textbooks over the years, but once you find out what is behind it, you might just blow your stack. In fact, I hope you and anyone who is a parent will. That is how change is made.

There is a movement that began years ago, it is based on some foolish and frightening idea that you can rewrite history, change facts, figures, everything. The Bush administration is in fact doing that by the way. Were you aware of that?

Check out 'relativism', it is not only destroying textbooks, it is destroying our court system too. There are judges that don't use the Constitution to make decisions, they are using what they deem as "correct" based on nothing relative to our laws. Ever wonder why you hear about some of the most dangerous criminals getting out with nothing more than a hand slap?

It's disturbing stuff and I suggest parents read the texts kids bring home and if there is a problem, raise hell with the principal and school boards. Form parental textbook groups to monitor what your kids are reading. Don't stop until you get things changed. It is your tax money running the public schools.

One of the things that always got me mad was that women and minorities were rarely given credit where credit was due, or worse, left out of textbooks completely. I learned more on my own reading about many American's than I ever learned in a school text. Sad but true.

I am an educator and so I have seen text that make me sick given what is in them or left out. If parents got involved, things would change. Remember, the administrators of schools are the ones that make these decisions regarding text, rarely teachers. Too much garbage regarding gay/lesbian relationships and other things not child-worthy are being included in books. Take a stand, stop the madness.

Political correctness has completely domnated the government, and the school system is just another part of that. They tell you that people got killed killed, people got hurt, but they don't even explain what happened. Pirates carved people up into lurid pictures, and vikings burned and pillaged villages, then killed the men and bedded the women. In WW2, Hitler gassed people into convulsions, foaming at the mouth, and, after a minute or two, death. You hear they gassed people, but not the details, which are what lets you know just how horrible these things were, which can help convince people that it must never happen again. Political Correctness must be undermined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Political correctness is a definite restriction on the material a teacher is allowed to teach her students. This material that is restricted is truth and reason. Used to be that ALL sides of an issue was allowed and the students could determine which side was valid in their mind. In other words, the student was taught to THINK. I think that is ONE reason that our educational systems are failing drastically.

I found recently in a American History Text that "The authors of the Constitution based their document largely on meetings of the native tribespeople out of respect for their culture..." I was astonished that such blatent lies were able to be told and passed off as truth. Apparently part of the problem is there is only one or two publishers for textbooks. Check it out, it's scary.

lol great point..,it seems the public education system is now taking out of text books anything that refers to a family as a mother and father for parents. The homosexuals have succeed in shoving their sexual preferences down the throats of our children..,arent they brave? Some schools are taking the debate of creation vs darwinism out of the text books, and not to mention they are now being taught as early as elementary how to have tolerance for homosexuals..,now how can you explain what a homosexual is to a child without brining up the sexual preference???The issue of god in the pledge of allegiance is constantly in court thanks to the atheists and the ACLU.So we have so much more to look forward to..,not to mention the fact that a kid cant get a soda pop or cookies out of a snack machine at school as the liberals want to police what children eat.

BEing PC is overrated. It stops things being taught properly and confuses the issue, because teachers aren't allowed to use specific words or phrases.

I think that PC is polluting just about everything, including kids' books. I think that today's society is as nuts as it can get - but I may be wrong there.

Since truth is subjective, your question is unanswerable. There is nothing wrong though with not causing children to panic about all sorts of things. Give them facts without prejudice.
