look for any "stereotypical" signs...talk to him about relationships and try to beat around the bush...asking him directly might not get you a "straight" (LOL!) answer

Guessing isn't going to get you anywhere. If you can, start a conversation with him regarding what he is looking for in a partner. At least this will take you in the area of differentiating whether he enjoys being with a woman or a Man, and go from there, you are going to have to initiate first, unless you get an opportunity where he is going to confront you.

Your instincts may be not that keen if you do not know already. Usually if he doesn't strike anything plus or minus on your gaydar he isn't.
Talk with him as you would someone your trying to make friends with. You want to try to get him comfortable around you before you start asking questions like Do you have a girlfriend? Why not? Your place or mine?

I would say just keeping watching him and see how he acts. You can also ask people that might know him. I think the best of all is talk to him get to know him and find out for your self. I'm not saying ask him like nothing but just become friends and get to know him.

if he knows your gay just watch how he reacts around you. besides finding out if he's gay you will also be able to pick up on if he's interested in you

I can usually always tell by just looking at them, especially making eye contact.
