I have an idea that would kill the proverbial two birds...
Landfills are bad right?
Prison overcrowding is bad and there doesn't seem to be a good deterent to keep felons out of them right?

So here's the idea: garbage trucks go directly to the prison, dump their load onto conveyor belts and the convicts spend 12 hour shifts sorting garbage into recyclable piles. Unpleasant, necessary work done that would actually enable the prison system to turn a profit and reducingour need on raw materials. Who would like to see this in action.

I like it. Why not?

I mean, okay, alright, some will say it's cruel and unusual. Hmm.

I got an even better idea. Instead of equating prisoners with garbage and only thinking about punishment and slave labor. why dont we try to rehabilitate these same MEN. yes I said men even though many of you look at them as animals. If the prison system focused on rehabilitation than punishment maybe these men could one day live good productive lives helping instead of hurting their communities. in america this is not possible because the only thing important is the DOLLAR.

Escape! With so many people--garbage truck drivers--having access to the prison, prisoners could easily escape.

Availability of Weapons! Think of all the garbage prisoners could use as shanks or otherwise weapons.

Availability of illegal items! Friends and family members could "hide" illegal items in "trash" so prisoners sorting the garbage could keep an eye out for to gain access to the illegal items.

"Hey, Bob, I put the drugs/gun/money in a Tilex bottle. Keep an eye out for it."

Next Theory.....

I would love to see programs like this in prisons there are many thing that could be done. I believe though that inmates should work regular 8 hr shifts and be paid more the pennies per hour.

It's already being done at many landfills.
But you give that job to a prison and the bleeding hearts will crawl out of the woodwork.

I am all in favor of this. Keep up the good ideas and let us see if people will pull their heads out of their butts long enough to see them.

Not a bad idea- with one caveat- if prisoners are in really gross conditions day after day they might be more inclined to act out or riot.

It's a great idea, but too many would scream that it's cruel and unusual punishment.
