Yes, "they are the future" is a nice and easy cliche to answer this question. Has anyone thought about the consequences of what that brand of logic is doing to the here and now...TODAY? Are we stealing from ourselves?

I must not have worded the question well. In no way was I saying kids weren't the future. I'm just worried most adults have under developed problem solving skills, social lives and everything else because it's easier to fixate on their children than it is to improve themselves. It seems so many people let themselves go (both physically and mentally) and use their children and childrens schedules as an excuse.

One of the key aims behind our creation is procreation.
I take it in this priority.
1. Finding ourselves
2. Procreation and upbringing the offspring. In this case, through us our next generation gets an opportunity to find themselves.
and the cycle goes on......

Until you're a parent and know what it's like to have a child to raise, then you will never understand the answer to your question.
And honestly, if anyone is stealing anything, then it's more that the current generations (boomers, gen-x'ers and gen-y'ers) are stealing from their children. We're stealing our children's money (social security will be bankrupt before gen-x'ers reach retirement age). We're stealing our children's natural resources (worldwide petroleum levels are depleting much faster than they were just a generation ago). And worst of all, we're stealing our children's innocence. When I was 6 or 7 years old, I didn't have to worry about terrorists, security regulations or bomb threats. The biggest thing we had to worry about at that age was doing earthquake drills (I grew up in California). Now, in a post-9/11 world, children are exposed to so much more insecurity and uncertainty. And with 24/7, 360* media coverage, they are seeing much more of it than when I was growing up in the early 80's.

Well, it seems that your question is your answer. People always say kids are so selfish because everything needs to revolve around them and I don't do enough things for myself ,when hence, here you are, asking why it revolves around them and not you! But, if people decide to have kids, they have to share the responsibility. But you're right, adults DO need their own time. Later on, the kids will thank you and take care of you, but maybe you won't be as young then.

Children, especially small children, depend on adults for everything. We are not "stealing from ourselves" if we care for children and if the world revolves around them. We are giving to ourselves because we know our children have the skills to make the world a better place. Take care of your kids, they take care of you when you can't care for youself anymore. It's a heavy investment in the future of the species.

"Everything" as you say doesn't revolve around kids. I can assure you of this as a parent.
However, having children is a responsibility and once you bring them into the world you have a duty and obligation to provide for them as best as you can. Often times, this involves having things "revolve" around them.
No one from this generation is stealing from ourselves. If anything, our continued depletion of fossil fuel resources to sustain an unsustainable lifestyle is stealing from future generations.

so which one are you? like hello, you were a kid too weren't you? or are you some kind of an insect, coming out of your larvae body into a fully fledged adult beetle, without going through childhood, remember, our lives will be so much enriched if we please other people rather than just yourself, service above self.
and on top of that, they're just kids! im 18, are you gonna take this crap from an 18 yr old, if not grow the hell up

When I was raising my kids we enjoyed doing things as much as they did. We tried to do things right along with them, if you can keep that kid within you alive you can feel young forever. I still get right in and do things with them like play games, ride bikes, and I enjoy everything that they want to do will be fun for me too because I will make it fun for me!!!!!
