the internal diameter of a test tube
the distance an athlete covers in a long jump

A scale with the marking in Inches or cms depending upon the scale is yard or metre. Test tube measurement if roughly required small scale or divider can be used but if accurate measurements required then Vernier caliper can be used.

You'd use a tape measure to measure length of a piece of cloth, in either inches, feet, yards, cm, or meters (usually inches and yards). You'd use a yard or meter stick or a rolling scale to measure a long jump.
