Psychologically speaking: (Generally) when a person is critical of another, and to what the degree/harshness/and strong the criticism is. It is then were the subconscious kicks in and picks up on verbal remark.
The stronger the criticism, the stronger the affirmation will be. Giving the critic those second thoughts about doing the same wrong again. The chances are slim that the mind over body will prevail by itself, that is where the degree of willpower of which the critic has and its use that will aid in positive outcome. So, (at times) criticism is good.

This happens whenever morals come into conflict with the periceved path of greatest pleasure. People will always choose the periceived path of greatest pleasure, no matter right and wrong. So we use denial and rationalization to make it okay in our own heads. This ability to hold two mutually exclusive traits at once is actually a genetic survial trait, the brain actually has many mechanisms which allow you to do things like care about the enviroment and also drive an SUV.
