Use a good auto cleaner/degreaser esp. made for engines and such. I recommend Aquaklean made by KBS Coatings. It comes in a concentrate, so you mix a solution as strong as ya need. The stuff works great and makes the job less laborous.

The best way is to take your vehicle to a professional auto detailer who specializes in engine cleaning. The cheapest way is to buy a can of engine cleaner at the parts store and follow the directions. You can also wipe down the cool engine with Simple Green every few months or so and keep it clean.
