I know from living in Washington state most of my life that there are hicks everywhere, it's not a regional thing! I think it's probably the accent that lots of people pick out, but to me, a hick is not about someone's accent or where they're from, it's just a certain way of life. Do Washingtonians have an accent? Or do people just think we're mountain men and women? Hehe :)

Not really. It depend on your beliefs and how you present yourselves. I think all this stuff about people from the south being hicks started when the northern metropolitan states wanted to vote democrat, and the southern states voted republican in 2004. Well, i personally think we'd be in the same situation if kerry was president as we are now, but that's a story for another question.
Anyway, I'm a black male from the north and find girls with southern accents sexy, and I'm not alone in thinking this way. And have heard plenty of educated people with the same accent, 4 of my college professors are from the south, so i don't think that way.

I have no room to call anyone a hick,being I am a part"Redneck"
But I have a Joke for You: Do you know the difference between a Zoo in the North and a Zoo in the South? Both have names by the cages but the ones in the South also have recipes.
PS. I love a woman's Southern accent.

I live in the Northeast, in western Massachusetts, where it is very liberal and a lot of people have alternative religions. I travel to the south a lot, though, and in my experience many people there have very strong Christian faiths and many are somewhat conservative. The people living here tend to look down on southerners, if only for that reason. However, a great majority have never strayed from their beloved homes--making them just as provincial as any other "hick." In fact, I find that people here are much colder and judgmental (at least sometimes, depending on where you are) than southerners, who always treat you kindly and stop to talk with you or just say hello while passing by.
Though I prefer the northeast (because it's where I grew up and because there are some really nice towns here) I also like the south. Most people I've talked to who don't like the south have never even been there and simply go on stereotypes that southerners are uneducated, inbreeding hicks. But in western Mass we certainly have a great deal of hicks! (sorry for the length)

<-northern that moved south.
no, i dont always think of all of you as hicks. its not the accent as much as the mentality of the true hick.
our accents aren't accents to us, but i know to you they are. people just sound different to those that live in different places.

Some do and like to poke fun at us but I have a girlfriend from up north that loves my southern accent and that I am a gentleman. When I was in the sevice everbody was from different parts of the country and we all used to tease each other some but it was all in fun and not out of disrespect.

I am from the South and I think it would be quite ignorant to consider everyone in an area to be "hicks." Attacking people because of the way they talk or how they grew up??? It is just pointless and stupid. The cycle of the north poking fun at the south and vice versa needs to end.

Some of them do, some of them don't. I have a sister n law that is from Long Island, New York. I think she actually believed that we'd have an outhouse, dirt floors and all that goes with the typical stereotype. She visited at our parents house's. We lived out of town at the time. When we went up to Long Island for their wedding and went to their apt and her parents home........our parents actually have a lot nicer homes and a lot more land in the south. She likes visiting here now. She just can't get used to there not being a deli on every corner.

Yes, because all southerners ARE hicks. It is not because of your stupid sounding accent. It is because everyone knows that everyone down south is like everyone in the movie Deliverance.
