Depending on the firewall you are using you can set "exceptions" to the firewalls rules that allow certain programs access to your computer. For example with the windows firewall go to your control panel and click on the firewall icon. Click on the exceptions tab. You can add or remove programs that are allowed access.

the windows xp firewall in in control panel, under inetwork settings, right click on device that has the net going through it, and hit properties, advanced.... you'll see it.
turning it off has the same effect as leaving your car door unlocked.
Someone may break in, but they may not. getting a virus is more likely with it off.

in general, unless there is a spefic reason to do so, leave it on.

first don't till any one that you don't know that your fire wall is of it will enter to your computer and put a worm in you computer and it depends on what a fire wall windows anti various specify ????
if windows from the control panel if anti various from the sittings
